Gaza crisis and ‘burglary tourists’: Joe Biden’s approval rating takes a hit

[ad_1]

Six months following the Hamas attacks on October 7, US President Joe Biden‘s initial stance of solidarity with Israel has seen a sharp decline in approval among American voters regarding his handling of the Gaza situation. After standing beside Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and assuring that the US stands with Israel, polls conducted for Newsweek by Redfield & Wilton Strategies reveal a growing disapproval among US voters.
A decline in approval
Polls show an intensification of voter disapproval towards President Biden’s actions since December.Despite his early assertion that Israel is “not alone,” the escalation of the Gaza conflict, which has resulted in at least 33,000 Palestinian casualties according to Hamas-run health authorities, has significantly affected American public opinion. The US has continued military aid to Israel, including the transfer of MK-84 bombs, while announcing humanitarian efforts like constructing a port in Gaza to facilitate aid.
Burglary tourists
The crisis has highlighted the issue of so-called “burglary tourists,” individuals from visa waiver-eligible countries engaging in sophisticated burglary operations targeting luxury homes in the US, including those belonging to families like the Starrs. The thieves, leveraging their visa waiver status, often from Chile, have brought national attention to the need for a reevaluation of the visa waiver program to prevent such crimes.
Generation Z and millennials’ perspectives
As per the Newsweek survey, particularly notable is the reaction among younger generations, with nearly a quarter of Generation Z and over a fifth of millennials attributing the most blame for the humanitarian situation in Gaza to President Biden, surpassing those who blame Hamas. This sentiment poses a significant challenge for Biden, as it reflects a broader discontent with US foreign policy among younger voters.
Political implications
Experts suggest that the Gaza crisis and the handling of “burglary tourists” could pose difficulties for Biden in explaining his stance to his base, especially as the presidential campaign trail heats up. While some analysts argue that issues like immigration and the economy will likely overshadow foreign policy concerns in voters’ minds come November, the discontent among Democratic voters, particularly highlighted by the Michigan primary protest, indicates potential electoral challenges for Biden.
