BENGALURU: In a tragic incident that echoes a similar event from five years ago at Bandipur National Park, a forest guard lost his life due to severe burn injuries sustained in a forest fire while a deputy range forest officer (DRFO) is battling for life in a Bengaluru hospital. The incident took place in the Manibeedu forest area near Kadumane Estate in Karnataka’s Hassan district. Forest guard Sundaresh suffered 65% burns.
Posted on range patrolling duty on February 16, a team of four, DRFO Manjunath, Sundaresh and two watchers, spotted the wildfire near Manibeedu and Moorkannu Gudda beats in Sakaleshpur range. The four walked over 7km in the dense forest to reach the location.
The terrain was inhospitable and the valley steep. “With wind blowing upwards, the fire soon spread in all directions, and enveloped the foresters. They clambered on to a boulder to escape the heat, but soon had to run from the spot due to the choking smoke. However, all of them were trapped. The team somehow managed to flash an SOS messageand sought assistance,” explained a forest official.
