NEW DELHI: A man in Florida was arrested and charged with felony child abuse for allegedly attempting to circumcise a toddler he was babysitting, reported USA Today.
Timothoes Powell, 29, was taken into custody on Monday and is facing a first-degree aggravated child abuse charge, according to the Holly Hill Police Department.
Holly Hill, the city where the reported crime took place, is located in Volusia County, approximately three miles north of Daytona Beach.
According to police, detectives learned about the child’s injuries on October 21 when a state Department of Children and Families investigator asked for assistance with the case, reported News Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network.
Online records indicate that Powell remains incarcerated with a bond set at $100,000.
His last known address was in Ruther Glen, Virginia, an unincorporated community about 30 miles north of Richmond, the state’s capital.
The incident unfolded when a DCF investigator was alerted by the hospital staff that the 2-year-old boy had been brought in for treatment due to a cut on his penis on October 17, causing bleeding.
Powell had been caring for the child while the mother was at work. Surveillance video showed Powell changing the child’s diaper, and he initially claimed that he found a piece of glass in the diaper, which he believed caused the injury.
However, after further investigation, Powell admitted that he became frustrated, lost his temper, and applied force to the child, causing the injury. Medical professionals, including a DCF nurse and a doctor, stated that the cut appeared to be too clean and precise to be the result of an accidental injury.
According to USA Today, records from Volusia County Circuit Court show that Powell is represented by the public defender’s office and has not yet entered a plea in the case. His arraignment is scheduled for November 21.
