NEW DELHI: An FIR has been filed against BJP leader Dilip Ghosh at Durgapur Police Station for his comments on West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, an official said on Thursday.
The FIR was filed following complaints by an advocate at Durgapur court and another individual, the official confirmed.
Ghosh faces charges under IPC sections 504 ( insult intended to provoke breach of peace) and 509 (intending to insult the modesty of any woman).
In the video circulated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Ghosh was heard making remarks about Banerjee’s statements identifying herself as a daughter of various states she visits. “She goes to Goa and says, ‘I am Goa’s daughter’, then goes to Tripura and says, ‘I am Tripura’s daughter’. First, let her clarify…it is not good to be just anybody’s daughter,” Ghosh is heard saying in a video shared by TMC. Ghosh also ridiculed the campaign slogan, “Bangla Nijer Meye ke chai (Bengal wants its own daughter).”
In response, the TMC lodged a formal complaint on Wednesday with the Election Commission, alleging a violation of the model code of conduct due to Ghosh’s “derogatory and offensive” comments directed at Banerjee.
The BJP also swiftly denounced Ghosh’s comments, asserting that they were inconsistent with the party’s principles and the respect owed to individuals, particularly a sitting chief minister.
Following the controversy, Ghosh clarified that his intention was not to personally attack the chief minister but to challenge her political assertions, which he deemed misleading.
