At the age of 102, Iris Apfel, a renowned fashion icon and interior designer with an Instagram bio that boldly states, “More is more & less is a bore,” has passed away. Her life was captured in the 2014 documentary Iris, directed by filmmaker Albert Maysles, which was a contender for an Academy Award. The news of her death at her home in Palm Beach, Florida, was confirmed by her estate’s spokesperson and shared by Apfel’s official Instagram account in a post on Friday.
Her agent, Lori Sale, expressed her admiration for Apfel, stating that it was a privilege to work with her. Sale described Apfel as a visionary who saw the world in a unique way through her trademark oversized glasses that adorned her face. Her perspective was filled with vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and prints, transforming the ordinary into something extraordinary. Apfel’s talent for blending the unconventional with elegance was truly enchanting.
Apfel was born in 1921 in Astoria, Queens, New York. At the age of 12, she developed a passion for collecting when she bargained for a brooch in a basement in Greenwich Village. This was just the beginning of her extensive collection of pieces that she would acquire throughout her lifetime. She later gained a reputation as a renowned lender. In 2005, the Metropolitan Museum of Art showcased her vibrant wardrobe in their first-ever exhibition solely dedicated to an individual’s clothing collection.
After completing her studies in art history at NYU and attending fine arts school at Wisconsin University, Apfel’s career led her to work for Women’s Wear Daily, where interior designer Elinor Johnson mentored her. She and her husband, Carl Apfel, founded the fabric company Old World Weavers and were also involved in restoring the White House during nine different presidencies.
Apfel has an impressive resume with various roles, such as a textile expert, visiting professor, brand representative, and social media sensation. She has collaborated with multiple companies on products such as eyewear, clothing, cosmetics, and rugs. At the age of 97, she became a model for IMG and continued to work even after celebrating her 100th birthday, stating in an interview with The Cut that she never takes breaks and enjoys working. Her latest H&M collection was even showcased at her birthday party, showcasing her dedication to her work.
