Emily Blunt is owning up to insensitive comments she made during a 2012 appearance on the Jonathan Ross Show.

After a throwback clip from the talk show went viral, in which Blunt called an American waitress “enormous,” the Oppenheimer actress admitted that she was embarrassed by her unkind remarks.

“I just need to address this head on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12-years ago,” she noted in a statement to People. “I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”

As the 40-year-old actress continued, she noted that she’s always considered herself “someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone,” adding, “so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for.”

However, she did not shy away from taking responsibility, as she further noted, “And yet it happened, and I said it and I’m so sorry for any hurt caused. I was absolutely old enough to know better.”

For those who may’ve missed the resurfaced talk show clip, during the sit down on the U.K. chat show, Blunt recalled meeting a fan while eating at an American-based Chili’s.

“Well the girl who was serving me was enormous,” Blunt said, mimicking a similar remark by host Jonathan Ross. “I think she got freebie meals at Chili’s. And she comes up and goes, ‘Did anyone ever tell you [that] you look a lot like Emily Blunt?’”

Blunt recalled responding with, “I have heard that, yes.”

The encounter took a sweet turn when the waitress asked, “Are you Emily Blunt?”

When the Mary Poppins Returns actress confirmed her identity, the fan gleefully replied with, “What are y’all doing here?”

While the audience laughed at the time, many now feel the remark about the waitress’ weight was mean-spirited. One fan noted on X, “The waitress probably was so nice too, very uncool.”

Another chimed in, “She took that mean girl assistant role in the devil wears prada to real life huh.”
