NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Thursday ordered a fresh slew of transfers across four states, shifting out a total 15 district magistrates (DMs), senior superintendents of police (SSP) and superintendents of police (SPs) who are either not conferred IAS or IPS or who happen to be relatives of elected political representatives.
EC said the transfers are in keeping with its commitment to maintaining a level-playing field in elections.
A full commission meeting comprising chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar and election commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, passed directions to transfer 13 non-cadre officers comprising four DMs and eight SSPs/SPs as well as one SSP and SP each who share kinship with elected political representatives.
Among the non-cadre officers who were shunted out are SP of Chhota Udaipur and Ahmedabad Rural districts in Gujarat; SSP of Pathankot, Fazilka, Jalandhar Rural and Malerkotla districts in Punjab; DM of Dhenkanal and SPs of Deogarh and Cuttack Rural districts.
In Odisha; and DM of Purba Medinipur, Jhargram, Purba Bardhaman and Birbhum districts in West Bengal.
Further, two senior police officers who are relatives of prominent politicians — SSP Bathinda (Punjab) and SP Sonitpur (Assam) — were also moved out. EC sources said the two officers were being transferred as a pre-emptive measure to dispel any apprehensions of administration being biased or perceived to be compromised on account of familial ties between them and elected politicians.
EC on Thursday instructed all state/UT governments concerned to promptly transfer non-cadre officers from their current roles as DM and SP/SSP, with immediate effect, and submit a compliance report to the Commission.
