NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate may file a chargesheet against Aam Aadmi Party in the Delhi excise probe sometime this week, without again summoning Delhi CM and AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal for questioning.
This was indicated by sources who said that the EDhas, in the meantime, questioned Rajya Sabha MP and AAP’s national treasurer Narayan Das Gupta, who is privy to all decisions of the party with regard to its finances.The questioning of Gupta, a well-known chartered accountant, happened on December 9 at at the agency’s headquarters here.
Inclusion of AAP in the chargesheet is crucial for the agency since, in response to a query from the Supreme Court, it had told the apex court that the party was among the main beneficiaries of the Rs 100 crore alleged payoffs from the liquor cartel for whose benefit rules were allegedly tweaked. The Enforcement Directorate also gave an undertaking to the SC to complete the trial of former Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia within six months.
On November 2, the ED had summoned Kejriwal for questioning. This was to complete formalities before filing of the chargesheet. Kejriwal, however, expressed his inability to join the probe, writing to the ED that he being the “incumbent CM of Delhi and national convener of AAP… is required to travel for campaigning (for the assembly elections in five states) and to provide political guidance to field workers”. With the elections over, it was expected that Kejriwal and others in AAP may be summoned again. However, the agency has settled for a different tack and chose to question AAP’s national treasurer instead.
Apprehending Kejriwal’s arrest, AAP recently conducted a “referendum” among people on whether he should continue as chief minister even after his arrest.
