Eastern front ‘deteriorated’, says Ukraine as Russia claims village

[ad_1]

Ukraine‘s commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky said Saturday the situation on the eastern front had worsened significantly as Russia claimed the capture of a village near the occupied industrial town of Avdiivka. “The situation on the eastern front has deteriorated significantly in recent days,” said Syrsky, who took over as commander-in-chief in February after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired his popular predecessor, Valery Zaluzhny.
Russia’s defence ministry announced its troops had “liberated” the village of Pervomaiske in the Donetsk region, 11km west of the largely destroyed town of Avdiivka, captured by Russia in the middle of Feb. Ukraine has not confirmed the loss. Its army said Friday that it had repelled attacks on the village.
On his Telegram channel, Syrsky wrote of “a significant intensification of the enemy’s offensive after the elections in Russia”.
The London Metal Exchange (LME) banned delivery of new Russian metal following sanctions imposed by the US and UK, but left the door open for old stocks to hit the market and raise the risk of pricing dislocations. No Russian metal produced from April 13 onwards will be eligible for delivery to the LME, which plays a central role in the global metals world as the home of benchmark prices for everything from aluminum to zinc. Russian metal produced prior to Saturday will still be accepted, as long as the parties delivering it can demonstrate to the LME’s satisfaction that the metal is not subject to the sanctions.
