AIZAWL: Myanmar’s government-in-exile, National Unity Government (NUG), recently asked refugees to refrain from acts prejudicial to India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
NUG was formed by a committee representing an elected lawmakers and members of Parliament ousted in the 2021 Myanmar military coup d’état.
Mizoram now hosts 35,126 Myanmar refugees, of whom 15,589 are in 162 relief camps while 19,458 live with relatives and friends or in rented houses.
The NUG’s ministry of foreign affairs also asked the refugees not to get involved in “illegal trafficking of drugs and wild animals, and related matters” and to “live in harmony and appropriately with host communities, follow the religious and social rules in the wards or villages” where they reside in India.
The refugees have also been asked to be cautious and avoid unnecessary involvement in political and administrative matters (example — political parties’ election campaigns and ethnic-based conflicts) of their host state. They should contact the nearest Myanmar parliamentarians and social organisations in case of social problems and difficulties, besides communicating with NUG’s ministry of foreign affairs, if necessary.
Mizoram police officials said no refugee has so far been arrested for drug trafficking from Myanmar, which shares a 404-km long border with the state. However, some in the state suspect that a section of the refugees might have helped drug traffickers.
With some refugees having been found to be possessing Indian documents other than the temporary IDs issued by the deputy commissioners, stringent orders have been issued to village authorities not to help them obtain Indian documents like passports, driving licences and electoral photo identity cards.
