NEW DELHI: Former US President Donald Trump had discussed his key considerations for choosing a vice-presidential candidate, emphasizing the paramount need for a running mate capable of effectively assuming the presidency if necessary. “It’s gotta be who is going to be a good president. You always have to think that,” Trump said in an interview with Fox Business Network’s “Sunday Morning Futures”.Trump acknowledged that he has “a lot of good people” in mind for the role. He mentioned Senator Tim Scott as “a real tiger” and praised South Dakota governor Kristi Noem for her decision not to challenge him.
Trump candidly admitted to making staffing errors during his previous administration but defended his actions by comparing them to those of past presidents, saying, “Of course, but everybody does. Obama had. What about Biden? Look at the people running this Biden thing. The difference is, I fire people. I fired Comey. I got rid of him.” He also reflected on his growth in political acumen since 2016, saying, “I also know people that I didn’t know before. I know now the smart ones. I know the dumb ones. I know the weak ones and the strong ones.”
Trump revealed plans to reinstate some former Cabinet members if he returns to office. He expressed confidence in his relationship with Chinese leader Xi Jinping but voiced concerns about China potentially meddling in the 2024 election against him, despite Xi’s assurances to President Biden to the contrary. Trump advocated for election reforms like same-day voting, paper ballots, voter ID, and the elimination of mail-in ballots to counter such interference.
Addressing his strategy to reconcile with “anti-Trumpers,” Trump emphasized his achievements in domestic policy, citing security, economic strength, and border control as key areas. He hinted that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) might endorse him, despite their fraught history.
Trump also commented on the Republican National Committee’s financial challenges, suggesting that changes, including possibly replacing RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, might be necessary. He brushed off his legal troubles, interpreting the indictments against him as a mark of honor for standing up for his supporters, and reiterated his innocence against all charges.
In his criticism of the current administration, Trump held Biden responsible for the recent strike by an Iranian proxy that killed three US soldiers in Jordan, asserting that such an incident would not have occurred under his watch. He confirmed that he is considering holding rallies in the Bronx and possibly at Madison Square Garden to broaden his electoral appeal.
