The actor was granted a second lease on life following a critical colon surgery.In his memoir titled ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,’ which was published in 2022, he disclosed that he was in a life-and-death battle as his colon had ruptured due to his use of OxyContin. He also shared that his heart stopped functioning during the surgical procedure.

The actor had told People in an interview that the doctors told his family that he had a two-percent chance to live. That’s the time he really came close to his life ending. The actor reportedly spent two weeks in coma and had a colostomy bag for about a year.

In the same interview, Matthew also mentioned that his heart had stopped beating for five minutes during his surgery following a colon burst. It happened as doctors gave him propofol.

Apart from these challenges, he also battled with alcohol addiction and more. In his memoir, he mentioned that he began drinking when he was just 14 years old. He described acting as another form of addiction and noted that it was not as harmful as alcohol, which was already taking a toll on his health. He also mentioned that it became increasingly difficult to wake up after a night of drinking.
