NEW DELHI: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Friday took a dig at former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, saying someone came from abroad, served in RBI, served as a chief economic advisor, and when his term of service ended he tried for renewal, and when it was denied he went back and said “India may face food crisis”. Dhankhar, however, made his remarks without taking the name of Rajan.
He was addressing the 61st convocation of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) here. Dhankhar said, “India attained the status of fifth largest economy overcoming erstwhile rulers UK in the first week of September, 2022. Indeed, it is a milestone achievement and the farm and agro sector had a significant contribution in India’s global rise. We cannot allow anyone to taint, tarnish and diminish achievements of those who are sweating for this nation.”
“I have seen as governor of West Bengal how food-grains were being distributed to 80 crore people (across India) during Covid-19 pandemic, and it is still being distributed…How was it possible? It’s because of you (farmers) who are our ‘annadata’ (foodgivers),” said Dhankhar while addressing the gathering of Agri scientists and farmers.
During the convocation, the Vice President presented the merit medals and awards to the meritorious students of ICAR-IARI, and also released 16 different varieties of cereals, fruits and vegetables. Union minister for agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar, minister of state for agriculture Kailash Choudhary, and IARI director A K Singh were also among those present on the occasion.
