Sources shared with Deadline that Denzel is in the final negotiations to join the cast of the upcoming sequel from director Ridley Scott.

This would mark the second project that Denzel and Ridley, 85, have worked on together. Back in 2007, Denzel starred in American Gangster, which Ridley directed.

The original Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe, was released in 2000 and won the Oscar for Best Picture.

In the upcoming sequel, Paul will be playing the role of Lucius, who is the son of Connie Nielsen‘s character Lucilla and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix‘s Commodus. The sequel will feature him as a grown man in a new story that takes place years after the events in the original film.

The Gladiator sequel currently scheduled to arrive on November 22, 2024.

Denzel‘s casting news comes after it was reported that another recent Oscar nominee is also in talks to join the movie.
