Delhi Police may file 10,000-page chargesheet under UAPA against NewsClick founder today | India News

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police is likely to file its first chargesheet against Prabir Purkayastha, founder and editor-in-chief of web portal NewsClick in the next few days. A 10,000-page chargesheet under UAPA may be filed on Saturday, police said.
Police have accused Purkayastha of acting in collusion with Nevil Roy Singham, a businessman of Sri Lankan-Cuban descent and an active member of propaganda department of Communist Party of China.
Police had filed an FIR in the case in Aug. It alleged that a funds to the news portal came from China to “disrupt sovereignty of India” and cause disaffection against the country. Cops also alleged that Purkayastha conspired with a group named People’s Alliance for Democracy and Secularism to sabotage the electoral process during 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Around 45 days after registration of the FIR, special cell conducted raids at around 100 locations on Oct 2-3. Purkayastha was arrested under UAPA over allegations that the news portal received money to spread pro-China propaganda.
Around 300 electronic gadgets were also seized from NewsClick offices and residences of journalists who were then questioned by the special cell.
“Documentary evidence” collected by police will be corroborated with judicial statement of NewsClick HR head Amit Chakraborty who turned approver in the case in Jan. His statement, recorded under 164 CrPC, is admissible as evidence in court under UAPA.
