‘Day of rage’: Police use tear gas as protesters swarm US embassy in Beirut

[ad_1]

Hundreds of Lebanese protesters, some of whom were waving Palestinian flags, gathered outside the US embassy in Beirut on Tuesday evening. This demonstration was in response to the massive explosion at a Gaza City hospital, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people. Police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. One protester was captured on video scaling a barbed-wire fence around the embassy to plant a Palestinian flag on the flagpole, while others cheered him on from below.
Simultaneously, protesters in Beirut also descended on the French embassy.
The protesters, many concealing their faces with Palestinian keffiyeh scarves, chanted slogans such as “Death to America” and “Death to Israel.”
These protests occurred shortly after Lebanon-based terror group Hezbollah called for a “day of rage” in Beirut in response to the deadly explosion at the Gaza medical center.
“Let tomorrow, Wednesday, be a day of rage against the enemy,” Hezbollah said in a statement.
The explosion at Gaza’s al-Ahli Hospital resulted in horrifying scenes. Verified video footage showed the building and its surroundings consumed by fire, with the hospital grounds scattered with mutilated bodies, including many young children. The area was also strewn with blankets, school backpacks, and personal belongings.
This tragic incident occurred amidst efforts by the US to persuade Israel to allow the delivery of essential supplies to civilians, aid organizations, and hospitals in the besieged Gaza Strip. The region has been under complete siege since Hamas’ violent actions in southern Israel the previous week, leaving hundreds of thousands of people increasingly desperate, searching for basic necessities like bread and water.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has cancelled his trip to Jordan. “After consulting with King Abdullah II of Jordan and in light of the days of mourning announced by President Abbas of the Palestinian Authority, President Biden will postpone his travel to Jordan and the planned meeting with these two leaders and President Sisi of Egypt,” the White House said in a statement.
