CHENNAI: DMK MPs T R Baalu and Tiruchi N Siva on Tuesday demanded that the Union government release Rs 5,000 crore as interim relief to the Tamil Nadu government for the devastation caused to Chennai and its surrounding districts by cyclone Michaung.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Baalu said more than one crore people in Chennai and its neighbouring districts — Kancheepuram, Chengalpet Tiruvallur — were affected by the cyclone.
“The situation is very grim. The cyclone has fully dedicated its fury on the people of Tamil Nadu,” Baalu said.
“The state government sent three memorandums to the Union government demanding Rs 6,230 crore as compensation, and chief minister M K Stalin has demanded Rs 5,000 crore as a stopgap mechanism. A central team should visit the state and undertake the assessment,” Baalu said.
Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, Tiruchi Siva said the funds would be used for relief work.
“Yesterday (Monday) (Union) home minister Amit Shah spoke to our chief minister over the phone, and the state government requested Rs 5,000 crore as interim relief. I urge the Union government to kindly release the relief funds to help the state government in its efforts to safeguard the people of Tamil Nadu,” Siva said.
He appreciated the state government for the relief measures. “The state ministers and the departments worked on war footing to provide relief to the people of the state. Electricity supply was stopped as a precautionary measure and all the essential needs were met by the state government,” Siva said.
