Cyber Fraud: Retired Bombay HC chief justice Ramesh Devkinandan Dhanuka loses Rs 50k in cyber fraud

MUMBAI: Ramesh Devkinandan Dhanuka (62), retired chief justice of Bombay high court, lodged an FIR with the Colaba police saying an unidentified person sent him a message asking to update his Pan card details. When he opened the link and submitted the Pan card details, Rs 49,998 was siphoned off from his bank account. The police are searching for the cyber fraudster.
Dhanuka lodged the FIR on December 18.In his complaint to the police he said that he was at home on November 27 afternoon when he received a message on his mobile phone. The message read, “Dear customer your SBI Yono account will be deactivated today. Please update your Pan card.” The message also contained a link and asked Dhanuka to click on it. He clicked the link. There was an instruction in a column to update the Pan card details. He submitted his Pan card details.
Soon, he received a phone call from his bank’s official who asked if Dhanuka had done any financial transaction of Rs 49,998? Dhanuka told him that he had not done any such transaction. The bank person then told him that money was deducted from his account. Dhanuka then called up the cyber helpline 1930 and registered his complaint and also submitted a written complaint to the Colaba police station.
Police have booked an unidentified person for cheating under the IPC and also invoked a section of IT act. Further probe is on.
