MUMBAI/THANE/SATARA: The current Covid surge claimed four lives in Maharashtra on Tuesday, taking the toll since March to 28 so far.
The four deaths included two from Satara and one each from Pimpri and Ratnagiri. Satara has become the first district in Maharashtra to make masks mandatory.
India logged 3,038 new Covid cases, while the active cases increased to 21,179, according to the Union health ministry data updated on Tuesday.
The active cases now comprise 0.05% of the total infections and the national Covid-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.7%, the ministry said.
The Covid case fatality rate was recorded at 1.2%.
According to Dr N K Arora, co-chair of the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), nearly 80 to 90% of the sub-lineages identified from the Covid positive samples in India over the past few weeks belong to the XBB lineage and predominantly XBB.1.16. “It is unlikely to cause a major wave of infectious or need for hospitalisations as witnessed in the previous waves,” Dr Arora said.
