NEW DELHI: In the past 24 hours, India has registered 743 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 3,997, a rise of seven cases, as reported by the Union Health Ministry.
The country witnessed seven fatalities due to the virus in the last day, with Kerala reporting three deaths, Karnataka two, and Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu one each.
Consequently, the cumulative tally of Covid-19 cases in India since the beginning of the pandemic in January 2020 has escalated to 4,50,12,484, with an increase of 743 cases in the past day.The total death toll has now reached 5,33,358, marking an increase of seven in the last 24 hours.
On December 29th, 2023, a total of 41,797 tests were conducted, as indicated in the report by the Indian Council of Medical Research.
As of December 28th, India has recorded a total of 145 instances of the Covid-19 subvariant JN.1.
“Up until December 28th, we have observed 145 cases of the JN.1 variant, based on samples collected between November 21 and December 18, 2023,” informed official sources to ANI.
The JN.1 subvariant is a derivative of the Omicron variant BA.2.86, also referred to as Pirola. Kerala was the first to report a case of this JN.1 Covid-19 variant.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently identified JN.1 as a variant of interest, distinct from its precursor BA.2.86. Nevertheless, according to the WHO’s current assessment, the overall risk associated with JN.1 is considered low
