Congress releases first list of candidates for Rajya Sabha elections; Sonia Gandhi, Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Ajay Maken among candidates | India News

NEW DELHI: The Congress party has officially released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha Biennial Elections, scheduled for February 27, across various states. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) confirmed the nominations, including key figures like Sonia Gandhi, Dr Akhilesh Prasad Singh, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Chandrakant Handore, Ajay Maken, Dr Syed Naseer Hussain, GC Chandrashekhar, Ashok Singh, Renuka Chowdhury, and M Anil Kumar Yadav.
As per the AICC release, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Sonia Gandhi from Rajasthan and Dr Akhilesh Prasad Singh from Bihar. Abhishek Manu Singhvi has been fielded from Himachal Pradesh, and Chandrakant Handore is nominated from Maharashtra.
Sonia Gandhi, who chairs the Congress Parliamentary Party, filed her nomination on Wednesday. A prominent political figure, she has been repeatedly elected to the Lok Sabha from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. The nominations come ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls expected to be held in April-May this year.
Akhilesh Prasad Singh, elected to the Rajya Sabha from Bihar in 2018, currently serves as the Bihar Pradesh Congress Committee President since December 5, 2022.
Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior advocate and Congress spokesperson, represents West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha.
Chandrakant Handore, a former cabinet minister for Social Justice in the Maharashtra government, has been appointed as a Working President of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee.
Additionally, Congress has nominated Ajay Maken, Dr Syed Naseer Hussain, and GC Chandrashekhar from Karnataka; Ashok Singh from Madhya Pradesh; and Renuka Chowdhury and M Anil Kumar Yadav from Telangana.

The last day for filing nomination papers is February 15, and the results of the elections will be announced on February 27. The Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled for 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, with 56 seats at stake. The Election Commission has set the voting period from 9 am to 4 pm on February 27. The tenure of the incumbent Rajya Sabha MPs is set to end in April.
