KOCHI: Amid speculation about the launch of a political party backed by BJP in the state, Kerala Congress (Joseph) deputy chairman and former MLA Johnny Nellore resigned on Wednesday from the party and announced plans to form a “secular party with national relevance”. Johnny, who also quit as UDF state secretary, told mediapersons that the new party would be formally announced in three to four days. “I cannot reveal more about the new party now as senior leaders are giving final shape to it. I can say that it will not be confined to Kerala…,” he said.
The KC (J) politician said he decided to quit the party for personal reasons. “For the past 30 years I had been a member of the UDF high-power committee besides serving as its state secretary from 2016. Unlike in the past, Congress party gives no importance to allies now. The party needs to introspect,” he said.
Nellore said he had handed his resignation letters to party chairman P J Joseph and UDF chairman V D Satheesan. “I have always stood with farmers and our aim is to form a national party that stands for farmers’ issues. Our demand is that the price of rubber should be raised to at least Rs 300,” he said.
Nellore had won Muvattupuzha seat in assembly elections in 1991, 1996 and 2001. Satheesan sought to downplay the development while Joseph alleged ulterior motives behind Nellore’s decision. The resignation comes ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to the state next week and amid a Christian outreach programme by BJP over the past few weeks.
