Congress: BJP, Congress clash over upcoming monsoon session of Parliament | India News

NEW DELHI: The ruling BJP and the principal opposition Congress have started to spar much ahead of the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament.
Parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi on Saturday, in a tweet, informed about the start of the forthcoming session. He said, “Monsoon session, 2023 of Parliament will commence from 20th July and continue till 11th August. Urge all parties to contribute towards productive discussions on legislative business and other items during the #MonsoonSession.”
Rajya Sabha MP and Congress head of communications department Jairam Ramesh promptly fired a salvo at the minister. Tagging Joshi, he said, “… and we hope Joshi-avare that the government will allow discussion on all issues of concern to the people that the opposition has been raising continuously, including those on which the prime minister has maintained a studied silence.”
Without naming any issue, Ramesh clearly hinted at the ongoing Manipur violence. The northeastern state has been witnessing ethnic clashes, arson, loot of weapons from armoury, shooting and blockades since May 3.
So far, at least 130 people are reported to have died in the violence which erupted over Manipur high court’s order according Scheduled Tribe status to the local Meitei community who live in the valleys. The violence first involved Kukis, who live on the hills. Later, it also engulfed the Nagas.
Home minister Amit Shah had visited the state from May 29 to June 2. Among other measures, he had appealed to people possessing illegal weapons to surrender them to the law-enforcing agencies.
This was followed by an all-party meeting which Shah held in Delhi on June 24. A day later, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh met him in the national capital. On the next day, Shah reportedly briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation in the state.
In a political drama, the Manipur CM offered to resign on Friday. However, he later declined as several women allegedly blocked his way to tender his resignation to governor Anusuiya Uikey.
However, the Congress has all along been demanding a statement from the PM over the situation in the state. The party leaders have also repeatedly asked Modi – even when he visited the US last month and then to the valedictory function of the University of Delhi on Friday – to at least make an appeal to the people of the state to maintain peace.
The monsoon session is likely to be held in the new Parliament building which was inaugurated by PM Modi on May 28 amid fanfare along with placing sengol (spectre from Tamil Nadu), which was gifted to first PM Jawaharlal Nehru on the eve of Independence. The Congress and some other parties had boycotted the historic function.
The past few sessions of Parliament have witnessed pandemonium over the ruckus created by the Congress and some other opposition parties over several issues. It has adversely affected the business of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
In all likelihood, the Congress will raise the issue of Manipur in the monsoon session of Parliament and try to corner the government over it. The signs of a logjam over Manipur, among other issues, is quite discernible from now itself.
