Congress: Bengal govt not standing with perpetrators: Congress’ Gourav Vallabh | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress on Monday gave a clean chit to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee over the violence in West Bengal during panchayat elections.
The stand appears significant in the wake of the opposition parties launching a national campaign to form a bloc against BJP, with its second meeting coming up in Bengaluru next week. TMC is a key member of the fledgling bloc.
Congress spokesman Gourav Vallabh responded to a flurry of queries on the “Bengal controversy” with a generic preference for peaceful elections. He rubbished BJP’s aggression on the issue by remarking that had it been a state ruled by the saffron party, it would have been standing with violence and its perpetrators.
“There is no place for violence in democracy. But there is a difference between supporting the people who indulge in violence and opposing the persons who perpetrate violence. As we see, Bengal government is not standing with the perpetrators. Had it happened in a BJP regime, BJP would have stood with the culprits. Mamata, instead, has clearly said that she is not backing those behind violence, and she has talked about strong action against the perpetrators,” Vallabh said.
Congress’s defence of Banerjee and attack on BJP stands in stark contrast with the Bengal Congress which, led by state president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, has been targeting the TMC chief for violence, a stand that has been in sync with BJP.
