Collect Uttarakhand netas’ voice samples, says court in 2016 sting operations case | India News

DEHRADUN: A CBI court on Monday ordered that voice samples of ex-CM Harish Rawat, Dwarahat MLA Madan Bisht, ex-minister Harak Singh Rawat and scribe-turned politician Umesh Sharma be collected in connection with two sting operation cases which happened in 2016, at a time of high political drama and turmoil when Harish Rawat was heading the Congress government in the state. The political storm had been triggered by the revolt of 9 Congress MLAs against Harish Rawat, which led to imposition of central rule in the state. Later though, Rawat managed to win the vote of confidence in the state assembly and retainpower. Both Sharma (independent) who conducted a sting against Harish Rawat and Bisht (Congress) who featured in a sting with Harak Rawat, are incumbent MLAs.
Based on the results of a preliminary inquiry initiated by the CBI on April 25, 2016, a case was registered against Harish Rawat and others under IPC section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and the Prevention of Corruption Act in 2019.
According to the FIR, Harak S Rawat had asked Sharma to meet Harish Rawat to convey his demand for the “post of deputy CM and cash”, following which Sharma arranged a meeting between the two on March 23, 2016. Harish Rawat purportedly consented for the induction of Harakas minister with two departments and the conversation was recorded.
Further on April 28, 2016, deputy editor of a news channel, Ayush Gaur, with the help of Harak Singh recorded video conversations between the latter and Congress MLA Madan Bisht in Delhi which revealed “allurements” given to the dissident MLAs of the Congress.
The CBI said that both the recorded conversations were sent to a forensic scientific lab which confirmed “no editing or tampering”. “Now for a fair investigation, it is necessary to take voice samples of all four persons for lab examination,” the CBI told the court.
Reacting to the CBI court’s order, Harish Rawat said, “I’m ready to provide my voice sample wherever and whenever they say. ”
