Closing bell: Sensex declines by 616.75 points, Nifty dips below 22,350

NEW DELHI: Equity benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty closed lower on Monday. Sensex fell by 616.75 points, or 0.83%, to 73,502.64, while Nifty lost 177.8 points, or 0.79%, to 22,315.75, weighed by a drop in mainly banking sector.
The top losers on Nifty trade were Tata Consumer Products, Power Grid Corporation, Tata Steel, Bajaj Auto, and SBI.
Apollo Hospitals, Cipla, and SBI Life Insurance, Nestle India were among the gainers.
Indian Indices declined in early trade on Monday after rallying in the past two straight sessions amid weak trends from the US markets and selling in banking stocks.
Sensex went lower by 204.64 points to 73,914.75, while Nifty slipped 49.15 points to 22,444.40 after a record-breaking rally, in the opening session.
In global front, Seoul and Tokyo dropped lower, while Hong Kong and Shanghai traded in the green territory, while US markets ended in the negative territory on Friday.
Tokyo stocks witnessed a significant drop on Monday, with the Nikkei falling as much as three percent due to a stronger yen and a sell-off in semiconductor shares.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 index closed at 38,820.49, down 2.19 percent, while the broader Topix index lost 2.20 percent, closing at 2,666.83.
