Chlöe is solidifying her solo career with her long-awaited debut album. The singer announced the upcoming arrival of “In Pieces” earlier this year, breaking the big news on Jan. 24 with a cinematic 17-second teaser showing herself balancing scales in a red latex dress. In the song that plays in the clip, Chlöe sings, “Wear my heart on my sleeve / they all say I’m naive / but it’s better than nothing / when did it all get so heavy now?”

In the weeks leading up to its release, Chlöe has dropped several updates for “In Pieces,” including the album’s two lead singles (“Pray It Away” and “How Does It Feel”), cover art, and finally a tracklist. In her 2022 Uproxx cover story, the singer teased that her debut album will be “surprising” to some because “I’m a brand new artist and I haven’t had a body of work out [yet], so it’ll be the first thing people hear from me.”

Previously, Chlöe had a successful run performing with her sister Halle Bailey as Chloe x Halle. The duo have put out two albums, “The Kids Are Alright” in 2018 and “Ungodly Hour” in 2020, with each release earning Grammy Award nominations. Though there hasn’t been a formal announcement of their dissolution, Chloe x Halle seems to be on pause as the sisters focus on their respective careers. Halle, for example, portrays Ariel in the upcoming live-action “Little Mermaid” and also stars in the upcoming movie musical version of “The Color Purple.” Meanwhile, Chlöe recently appeared alongside Dominique Fishback and Damson Idris in Prime Video’s “Swarm,” plays the lead in Peacock’s forthcoming choir musical “Praise This,” and was recently tapped for the film adaptation of “Girl From the North Country.”

“Have Mercy” marked Chlöe’s first solo single in 2021. The sex-positive anthem had all the makings of a modern hit: a big-budget music video, a TikTok challenge, and several internet-breaking live performances. Chlöe has since released a few other singles in the lead-up to her album, including “Treat Me,” “Surprise,” and “For the Night” featuring Latto — none of which are featured on “In Pieces.”

Expectations are high for Chlöe’s debut album. She’s been considered a protégé of sorts for Beyoncé, ever since signing to the latter’s Parkwood Entertainment in 2015. Her powerful vocals often draw comparisons to the pop star, as does her work ethic. However, she’s yet to have a larger body of work for listeners and critics to parse through. “In Pieces” will be a joint release from Parkwood and Columbia Records, which also puts out Beyoncé’s music.
