China ‘does not sell lethal weapons’ to Russia, Wang Yi assures Ukraine | World News

NEW DELHI: Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi has assured Ukraine that China “does not sell lethal weapons” to Russia for its war against Kyiv.
During a meeting with Ukraine’s foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba, at a security conference in Munich, Wang Yi stated that China remains neutral and does not take advantage of the situation by providing weapons to conflict areas or parties involved in the conflict.
China’s relationship with Russia has grown significantly in recent years, and Beijing has faced allegations of supplying lethal arms to Russia.
The proximity between Beijing and Moscow spiralled, particularly after the West imposed sanctions on Russia to dent its economy amid the Ukraine war.
However, China has consistently denied these accusations.
The statement from Wang Yi reaffirms China’s neutral stance that Beijing has been asserting ever since the outbreak of the Ukraine war.
“No matter how the international situation changes, China hopes that China-Ukraine relations will develop normally and continue to benefit the two peoples,” Wang told Kuleba, according to the ministry’s readout.
“Once again, I would like to thank Ukraine for helping the Chinese people evacuate safely under emergency conditions,” it said. “The Chinese people will never forget that.”
The readout said Wang stressed that China adheres to the political settlement of flashpoint issues and insisted on promoting peace talks.
“We will continue to play a constructive role in bringing an early end to the war and re-establishing peace,” Wang told Kuleba.
“Even if there is only a glimmer of hope for peace, China will not give up its efforts.”
