[ad_1]

Season two of Drag Race Philippines brought all of the charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent you would expect from any season, with the gorgeous (and appropriately named) Captivating Katkat emerging as the Philippines’ Next Drag Superstar.

Captivating Katkat, one of the most prominent drag queens in the Philippines, holds audiences captivated with her extraordinary talents. She made Drag Race herstory as one of three trans women to make it to the finals (along with fellow queens Bernie and M1ss Jade So .) As a transgender woman, she has fearlessly embraced her identity and shattered boundaries in the drag world.

Her claim to fame is a viral video of her rendition of Let It Go which has amassed over 500,000 views and has garnered attention from all over the world. Before arriving at Drag Race, she has earned numerous titles, cementing her status as a luminary in the drag community.

On Drag Race, she won two Ru Badges including one for her Snatch Game impersonation of Filipino politician Joy Belmonte, the mayor of Quezon City.

We had a chance to chat with Captivating Katkat about her experience this season, her journey to Drag Race and lots more in our exclusive interview.

What was your reaction when you found out you were cast on the show?

I felt so ecstatic that my ultimate dream will finally come true.

What was the biggest challenge for you?

The biggest challenge for me in the competition was missing my family. That’s where my inner saboteur kicks in, but I fought it and what I did was to focus and concentrate in the competition.

What was your favorite thing about the season?

I love everything about the entire season!!! From the staff to the cast, the challenges and runways. I enjoyed this competition so much.

Did you discover anything surprising about yourself while on the show?

Yas! I discovered that I can excel in Snatch Game. Just a fun fact, I did my character in Snatch Game on the spot, no rehearsals or whatsoever. It was all impromptu, from the makeup and punchlines. I was so surprised that I did great and won the challenge.

If you could go back and do anything over, would you?

No, because I believe that everything has happened for a reason.

How did you get your start in drag?

I was asked to audition in a theater bar to be a dancer first. Then, the owners saw a potential in me and gave me a chance to perform in drag. But through the years, drag has evolved and the rest, as they say, is herstory.

Where did your drag name come from?

Katkat came from my fave condiment “ketchup”. At first it was supposed to be Ketket, not Katkat, but when our choreographer asked for my name and I said KETKET, she said “Okay, KATKAT, welcome to the family!” so I just agreed, ahaha! Then Captivating was given by the bar manager, he said I always captivated the audience every time I performed. That’s how Captivating Katkat was born.

How would you describe your style?

My drag is very versatile. I don’t want to keep my drag in a box with just a specific style. I always want to try new things and do everything and anything in drag.

What can fans expect when they see you perform live?

Always expect the unexpected, because I’m very spontaneous when it comes to performance.

What’s your number one beauty tip?

Always have enough sleep.

You’re one of a growing number of trans winners on Drag Race. How do you think your win impacts trans representation?

It has a huge impact in the trans community, most especially here in the Philippines because we only have few trans drag queens here in the country. Representing the trans community and taking home the crown was a big achievement to us, that trans are not only for beauty pageants but can also slay drag competitions.

What’s next for you?

First, I will definitely enjoy my reign as the newly crowned Drag Race Philippines Superstar. To start off, I will be celebrating my 23 years in the drag industry. Also, I am looking forward to doing some campaigns for the trans community and baby drag queens. And lastly, I can’t wait to travel the world!

I was born to be a performer! Since I was in elementary, I’ve always performed in our school and I also joined dance contests even before I started doing drag.

Who has had the biggest influence on your career and why?

Lady Gaga! My goddess, my inspiration, my idol! She inspires me a lot not only in drag but also in life. As M1ss Jade So said “Lady Gaga fan ka pa naman!”

What is your favorite song to perform?

I have so many favorite songs to perform. Some of them are “Fight Song” by Rachel Platten, “A Million Dreams” version by Xtina, and “Try It On My Own” by Whitney Houston because I can relate to the lyrics.

Who would you want to play you in the movie of your life?

Oh my God! Who else? Of course, my idol and inspiration, Lady Gaga!

What superpower or talent would you like to wake up with tomorrow?

I want to have the power to change the mindset of some people, especially their views about the LGBTQ community. I want them to realize that we are human, and that we deserve to be loved and respected, just like everybody else.

What are three things you can’t live without?

Water, food, and drag…because drag is my life!

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Not all battles must shed blood. Be different and embrace all changes. You should know better because you have managed to metamorphosize into the beautiful butterfly that you are.
