In about 20 years, BSE’s market cap has risen by 33 times, data from the exchange showed. In September 2003, it was at Rs 10 lakh crore. The emergence of India as one of the major economies of the world, listing of several large companies and also from diversified sectors of the economy, added to this growth, market players said.
Since the low of Rs 107 lakh crore, BSE’s market cap is now up more than three times, driven mainly by buying by foreign and domestic funds. While foreign funds have net infused nearly Rs 2 lakh crore into Indian stocks since the pandemic-induced lows recorded in late March 2020, domestic mutual funds have emerged even bigger buyers. Though the systematic investment route alone, domestic funds have infused more than Rs 5 lakh crore, industry data showed.
Listing of a large number of companies, that include LIC, PayTM and Zomato, also added to BSE’s market cap in the last few years.
