Brazilian president Lula says Navalny’s death should be probed before accusations

NEW DELHI: Brazil’s president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday has called for a thorough investigation into the death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny before making any accusations.
This stance stands in contrast to the strong and swift criticisms from Western leaders, including US president Joe Biden, who held Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible.
The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov rejected these accusations as unacceptable. Speaking at a press conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, after attending an African Union summit, president Lula emphasised the importance of refraining from taking a stance on Navalny’s death at this moment, citing it as a matter of common sense.
He stated, ‘A citizen died in prison, and to make an accusation is to trivialise. I hope that a coroner will provide an explanation for why the individual died, that’s all.’
President Lula’s comments highlight the divergence between non-Western nations and the West in their response to Russia, particularly regarding the invasion of Ukraine. While Lula has consistently advocated for peace in Ukraine and criticized Russia’s actions, he also believes that the United States has unnecessarily prolonged the war.
Navalny’s mother was informed that her son had been affected by ‘sudden death syndrome,’ and his body would not be released to the family until the investigation was completed, as reported by his team.
During the press conference, president Lula stressed the need for the Global South, represented by the Brics bloc (Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa), to assert its rightful place in the global economy, politics, and culture. The recent expansion of the Brics bloc further strengthens this objective, with the inclusion of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates in January.
