Border Wall: Biden faces backlash from both sides for building new border wall in Texas

NEW DELHI: US President Joe Biden has been facing criticism from Republicans and Democrats over the decision on new border wall construction in Texas, reported BBC.
Contrary to Biden’s “not a serious policy solution” poll plank, some 20 miles (32 km) of walls will be built in a sparsely populated stretch of the Rio Grande Valley.
In response to the backlash from the lawmakers, Biden said he was unable to halt the work as the funding was singed while Donald Trump was the president. Amid the ongoing tussle over the wall construction, Republicans have accused Biden of hypocrisy, while the Democratic Party has “walls did not work”.
Nevertheless, the Biden administration on Wednesday paved the way to waive more than two dozen federal laws, including the one meant to allow more barriers to be built along the US-Mexico border in southern Texas.
According to BBC, in a notice announcing these waivers, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said there was an “acute and immediate need” for the construction.
“I tried to get them to redirect that money. They didn’t, they wouldn’t. I can’t stop that. This administration has made clear that a border wall is not the answer. That remains our position and our position has never wavered,” the US president was quoted as saying by BBC.
However, he asserted that he considered that border walls were not effective.
The increasing influx of migrants into urban centres like New York City has gripped the Biden administration with a considerable challenge as he has come under intense scrutiny for his approach to border management.
Since the beginning of last October, American authorities have apprehended over 2.2 million individuals attempting to cross the US-Mexico border.
During his presidency, constructing a border wall was a prominent policy initiative of Donald Trump, a move that drew strong opposition from Democrats, including President Biden.
Meanwhile, former president Donald Trump quipped at Biden, asking if the American Presdient would apologise to him.
“Will Joe Biden apologise to me and America for taking so long to get moving?” Trump wrote in a post on his Truth Social platform on Thursday, as per BBC.
