BJP lashes out at investor George Soros, says he is ‘targeting’ Indian democratic system | India News

NEW DELHI: Billionaire investor and philanthropist George Soros has come under fire from BJP for allegedly attempting to weaken the country’s democratic system. Union minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani accused Soros of not only targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi but also the Indian democracy.
At a press conference held at the BJP’s Delhi headquarters, Irani lashed out at Soros, calling him a man who is designated as an economic war criminal and has expressed his desire to break the Indian democracy. She alleged that Soros wants a government that is pliable to his needs for making his nefarious plans successful.
The BJP leader claimed that Soros has created a fund of over $one billion to intervene in democratic systems, including in India, and has pronounced funding over one billion dollars to target leaders like PM Modi.
Soros had recently made remarks at the Munich Security Conference, saying that the turmoil engulfing business tycoon Gautam Adani’s empire may open the door to a democratic revival in India. He had noted that PM Modi had been “silent” on allegations of fraud and stock manipulation at Adani’s industrial empire, and that the Prime Minister would “have to answer questions” from foreign investors and Parliament on the topic.
The Adani Group has come under intense scrutiny since US short-seller Hindenburg Research accused the company of engaging in “brazen stock manipulation and accounting fraud” over decades. The allegations have shaken faith in India as an investment opportunity, and Soros’ remarks have added fuel to the fire. However, the BJP’s attack on Soros has been met with criticism from opposition parties and some members of the public, who view it as an attempt to deflect attention from the Adani scandal and silence criticism of the government.
