MOSCOW: The Kremlin slammed US President Joe Biden for his remarks on Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that these derogatory comments reflect poorly on the United States. He also suggested that Biden’s remark was an attempt to portray himself as a Hollywood cowboy but doubted its effectiveness.
“The use of such language against the head of another state by the president of the United States is unlikely to infringe on our president, President Putin…But it debases those who use such vocabulary,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Reuters.
“Has Mr Putin ever used one crude word to address you? This has never happened. Therefore, I think that such vocabulary debases America itself,” Peskov added, adding that such language was a disgrace for the United States.
This reaction came after Biden made the “crazy SOB” remark as part of a sentence about threats to the world – including “that guy Putin and others”, the risk of nuclear conflict and the existential threat to humanity from climate change.
Dmitry Medvedev, an ally of Putin who served as president from 2008 to 2012, further escalated tensions by describing the real threat to the world as “useless old geezers, like Biden himself.” Medvedev accused Biden of being senile and ready to start a war with Russia.
The strained relationship between Russia and the West has reached its lowest point since the Cold War due to the conflict in Ukraine, the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, and U.S. allegations of Russia’s plans to deploy a nuclear weapon in space. Diplomats from both sides acknowledge that relations between the two largest nuclear powers have never been worse, even during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
Biden’s recent comments regarding Navalny’s death in a Russian prison have further escalated tensions. The U.S. President attributed Navalny’s demise to the actions of Putin and his associates, while Russian officials argue that the West rushed to blame Putin without sufficient evidence.
