JAMSHEDPUR: Temporary vendors, who make their living by selling different kinds of items by the roadsides and traffic lights ahead of important days such as Republic Day or Independence Day, are making extra money in view of the ‘pran pratistha’ ceremony at Ram Lalla temple in Ayodhya on January 22, in Jamshedpur.
Such vendors, who usually sell Tricolours or Christmas caps, are now busy selling saffron flags and other related items at various busy crossings in Jamshedpur.
One such vendor near Basant Talkies Mall in Sakchi, Mohan Sharma said, “For many, the consecration ceremony might be a religious event, But for scores of roadside vendors in the city it’s an opportunity to make an extra living. That is why roadside stalls have mushroomed, selling saffron flags and other items.” He said flags bearing pictures of Lord Ram and Hanuman are selling like hot cakes.
Mohit Singh, who had come down from Adityapur to buy flags and other decorative items, said, “The event in Ayodhya is historic and we also want to be a part of it, so we will decorate our house with flags. We have bought saffron mufflers with Ram’s picture painted on it.”
Prashant, another shop owner, said his father had invested Rs 4,000 to buy various kinds of merchandise related to the Jan 22 event from the wholesale market and by Saturday more than three-fourth of the stock were already sold. The 13-year-old boy looked visibly happy as the profit earned will economically help their family. “Ram ji is helping us earn extra this year,” Prashant said.
The family runs a small stall on the pavement selling various kinds of gutkha for a living all round the year. Sudha, a mother of two, said, “Since I put up a stall a week ago, the earnings from selling Ayodhya event-related items vary from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per day. This will help me wave off the Rs 5,000 loan I have taken last month for my child’s treatment.”
