LUCKNOW: Hailing the Supreme Court‘s quashing of the remission granted by the Gujarat government to 11 convicts in the gang- rape case of Bilkis Bano, professor (retired) Roop Rekha Verma on Monday said the verdict to people like her means that we can tell the world that that atrocities do happens in the country, but justice is served in the end.
“We are less embarrassed now,” said Verma, who along with Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Subhashini Ali, scribe Revati Laul, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra and former IPS officer Meeran Chadha Borwankar, had approached the top court challenging the Gujarat government’s decision.
“I haven’t read the judgment completely as it is very long, but it boosts confidence that still there are judges who are impartial, and we can expect justice as per law,” said Verma, who hasn’t met Bano personally.
“After a very long time, a good judgment has come. The 11 rape-cum-murder convicts will have to return back to jail. It will teach a lesson to these offenders,” said Verma, who runs an organisation called ‘Saajhi Duniya’ which works for equality among all. She said, “Justice BV Nagarathna’s comments in the judgment are very encouraging, as it’s in the favour of victim. Rape (that too gangrape) and murder are the most heinous crimes in the world, but these convicts were welcomed with aarti and garland. During their sentence, most of the time they were in public on parole or furlough, and never expressed regret for the crimes they committed.”
Citing Justice Nagarathna comments, Verma said, “The SC, too, has observed that Gujarat government acted in complicity with the convicts…it was this very apprehension which led the court to transfer the trial out of Gujarat. This complicity is very serious and it’s a matter of shame that an entire state machinery was working to save the rapist.”
She expressed apprehension that the problems of Bilkis Bano are still not over.
“I’m informed that she left the locality where she used to live, due to fear of insecurity. It’s the duty of the government that the citizen who has faced so much of violence and atrocities, must be protected. Outside the legal frame, the Gujarat government is showing that it doesn’t stand with ordinary citizens.”
“I salute Shobha Gupta, the lawyer who fought Bilkis Bano case and helped her to get justice,” she said.
