Atlee’s latest directorial masterpiece, ‘Jawan’, has not only become the highest-grossing Hindi movie of all time in India but has also marked his introduction to Hindi-speaking audiences. Known for his distinctive style characterized by multiple plot lines, slow-motion action sequences, and the use of dual roles, Atlee recently discussed the reasons behind these elements while speaking to an entertainment magazine.
The inclusion of multiple plot lines in ‘Jawan’ was a deliberate choice, as Atlee acknowledged that it might be overwhelming for some viewers. He emphasized catering to the diverse tastes of the audience, stating, “Our audience has diverse tastes. Certain people will love the father-daughter scenes, some will love the action bit, and some will love the emotional bits, something you will take from the film. The ‘ensemblity’ will make you satisfied. That is my rhythm.” Atlee compared his approach to a village carnival with various attractions, aiming to provide entertainment that leaves the audience both entertained and enriched.
Addressing the depiction of violence in ‘Jawan’, Atlee stressed the importance of impact without excessive gore. He shared insights into the challenges of filming scenes involving a puppy named Bunty, emphasizing the responsibility of presenting hard-hitting scenes with a purpose. Atlee’s aim is to appeal to a wide audience age range, from 6 to 60, by carefully balancing elements like violence within the context of the story. One of the director’s signature techniques is the frequent use of slow-motion shots. He explained that this choice is influenced by the audience’s preference for replays in sports and how it complements the mood of his films. Atlee’s unique aesthetics and the use of the phantom camera have become a trademark in his works, resonating with both viewers and himself.
‘Jawan’ achieved a remarkable milestone with a staggering box office collection of Rs 546 crore in India, surpassing the previous record-holder ‘Pathaan’, which had a lifetime collection of Rs 543 crore. The film featured an ensemble cast, including Shah Rukh Khan, Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, and an extended cameo appearance by Deepika Padukone. Atlee’s cinematic vision and storytelling prowess have certainly set a new benchmark for success.
