The identity of Ella‘s mother is unknown as Jonathan has always been very private about his personal life.

For now, we know that Ella is 9-years-old, lives in Atlanta with her mother, and is mixed race. Jonathan has talked about wanting her to have an education like he did and that he picks movie roles knowing that she will watch the films one day.

Jonathan attended a performing arts high school in Texas, then went to college at University of North Carolina School of the Arts and the Yale School of Drama.

“I have a 7 year old who’s mixed race,” Jonathan told People in June 2020. “She has to understand that it’s actually not ‘black history’— it’s American history. The way it’s taught now, its honestly the Jim Crow system of separate but equal. We’ll give it one month, 12 pages in the history book…we’ll talk about Harriet Tubman, Rosa Park, MLK, then we’ll give you a little quiz about it. And that’s it.”

After George Floyd was killed, Ella‘s mother called Jonathan and told him, “Look, I need you to talk to your daughter. She’s frustrated and she’s angry because her hair won’t fall down—her hair goes up.”

Jonathan told W Magazine in June 2020 that he FaceTimed his daughter and said, “You have a crown. That’s why your hair goes up. Your hair, your crown, came from daddy, came from his mama, came from his father, came from his sister. Sometimes that crown can get you in trouble in this world, and it’s not right. And some people want to take that crown from you.”

In October 2021, Jonathan told Insider that Ella “don’t care what Daddy be doing,” but he’s mindful when picking his roles.

“I just want to make her proud and do things that she could look at and go, ‘Yeah, that’s the way that goes — I understand why he did that,’” he said. “Or at some point she will watch [my] films and then she’ll see Regina King and she’ll see Zazie Beetz. And maybe she’ll watch [Lovecraft Country] and see Jurnee Smollett, see Aunjanue Ellis and understand that even though I tell her, she can see it: ‘You can be all this, you can be all that.’ Sh-t, you can be in that love if you want, clearly.”

In a February 2023 interview with Ebony, Jonathan was asked about the ways he expands his daughter’s world so that she never accepts the bare minimum.

“One of the most beautiful things we talk about is need versus want. I grew up very needy, meaning there are things I needed that I didn’t have. Fortunately for my kid, she’s not in that position. I worked very hard and continue to work hard—not just for the present, but for the future. She doesn’t have to do that, but she does understand,” Jonathan said. “We teach worth and value in our household, and self-worth. A big thing is, as she changes her hair up, I’m very clear to tell her I liked it the way it was. I love it now; I loved it then. Another thing we teach is smiling. Your emotions belong to you. No man can make you do anything or feel anything. And like her father, she’s not easily impressed. Yeah, I mean, big-head boys are going to have a hard time dealing with her. I feel bad for [them], because then you have to deal with her and me.”

In a recent interview with Mr. Porter, Jonathan revealed, “We like to shop together, read books. Roald Dahl, A Series Of Unfortunate Events. I have her memorize poetry – Mary Oliver. She has a whole section about dogs. And my girl has her own dog, a cockapoo.”

Jonathan recently talked about his decision to initially walk out of his Marvel meeting.
