HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh has registered an over three and a half times increase in the number of startups being recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) since 2019, with 586 startups being recognised in 2023 as against 161 startups in 2019.
This was revealed by the Union minister of state for commerce and industry Som Prakash in Rajya Sabha on Friday in response to questions regarding India and AP’s startup ecosystem raised by AP Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Parimal Nathwani.
The surge in the startup numbers in AP has also resulted in a three-and-a-half fold increase in the number of direct jobs created by startups in the state. The number of direct employment opportunities created by DPIIT recognised startups in AP shot up to 5,669 in 2023 from just 1,552 in 2019, the minister informed RS.
Giving all-India startup data, the minister said while 10,604 startups were recognised across the country by DPIIT in 2019, this number jumped three-fold to 34,779 being recognised in 2023. The number of jobs created also rose over three times to 3,90,512 in 2023 from 1,23,071 in 2019.
The minister also pointed out that the total number of DPIIT recognised startups has shot up to 1,17,254 across the country as on December 31, 2023, with over 12.42 lakh direct jobs being created by them in a significant economic impact.
With this, there is at least one recognised start-up in every state and union territory (UT) spread across over 80% of the districts across the country, the minister added.
The minister also pointed out that since the Start-up India initiative was launched in 2016 by govt, 55,816 DPIIT recognised startups had at least one woman director on their boards as on December 31, 2023.
