Lathmaar Holi
Lathmaar Holi is a unique celebration that takes place in the towns of Barsana and Nandgaon, near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, India. It’s known for its vibrant and playful tradition where women use sticks to playfully hit men, and men use shields to protect themselves while trying to drench the women in colors. The word ‘lath maar’ is a Hindi word, where lath means stick and maar stands for beating, together, it is about tradition where women beat men by stick and to protect themselves, men often use shields.
Date & Origin
The festivities of Lathmaar Holi 2024 began on March 18th and will continue for a week. This tradition is rooted in the Hindu legend of Lord Krishna and Radha. It is said that Lord Krishna used to visit Radha and her friends to playfully bother them and smear colours on their faces, prompting the women to respond by thrashing him with sticks.
Significance & Celebration
Lathmaar Holi celebrates the eternal love and union of Lord Krishna and Radha, as well as the victory of good over evil. The celebrations start a week before the main Holi festival and include singing, dancing, and the playful exchange of colours. Traditional drinks like thandai are also enjoyed during this time.
