All Is Well: Government must discuss Manipur in House, Sonia Gandhi tells PM Modi | India News

NEW DELHI: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi on Thursday directly asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a discussion on Manipur in Parliament, setting the tone for a turbulent monsoon session, even as the joint opposition bloc INDIA is mulling an offensive outside the House with an all-party delegation to the strife-torn state, to corner the governing BJP.
When PM Modi made the customary round of the opposition benches on the first day of the new session, Sonia Gandhi told him that the government must discuss Manipur, calling it a joint demand of Congress and like-minded parties. Her reply apparently came in response to Modi inquiring about her well-being in the wake of the emergency landing of her flight in Bhopal the day before. Sonia replied she was fine, but added that the country’s concern was about women of Manipur. Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who was standing next to Sonia, said “Modi did not anticipate such a direct plea on Manipur and appeared unsettled. He merely said ‘let me see’.”
While piling pressure inside the Parliament, the opposition plan is to complement it by cornering BJP outside too. Sources said the INDIA bloc is likely to send a delegation of its constituents to Manipur. A large enough team may visit the state next weekend. The issue was discussed between the opposition parties and leader of opposition Mallikarjun Kharge ahead of the start of the monsoon session proceedings.
The delegation to Manipur could be the field launch of the anti-BJP coalition after its formal consecration on Tuesday. With PM having avoided comments on, and visit to, Manipur, it is alleged that the BJP mascot is trying to underplay a serious development to keep himself aloof from its repercussions. As a result, the opposition wants to reinforce its concern for the people of the state, which, it believes, will corner BJP further.
The developments pretty much summed up the agitated mood of the opposition, which described a discussion on Manipur in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, coupled with a statement by the PM, as “the first order of business” —a clear warning of a prolonged standoff if the demand is not heeded. Congress president Kharge said, “Modi government and the BJP have changed democracy into Mobocracy by destroying the delicate social fabric of the state. PM Modi, India will never forgive your silence.”
