MUZAFFARNAGAR: A local court in Aligarh sentenced a foreigner to seven years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh in a fraud and IT Act case.
According to Santosh Kumar Yadav, assistant prosecution officer, “Additional chief judicial magistrate, 4, Shivank Singh, passed the judgment against a Nigerian national identified as Onyeka Solomon who had duped a woman.The victim, Adeeb Khan, lodged a report at the Civil Lines police station in 2021. Adeeb stated that she got a call from a man posing as a customs official that an international parcel she had ordered had arrived. The fraudster then asked her to pay customs duty or else action would be taken against her. She was then forced to pay Rs 3.84 lakh.”
After the investigation, police arrested the accused residing in India and sent him to jail. Now, the court pronounced its verdict on Saturday.
“Adeeb had filed a police complaint at the cyber police station in Aligarh, based on which an FIR was lodged under IPC sections 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), 120B (criminal conspiracy), and 66C, 66D IT Act. After hearing witnesses from both sides and observing evidence, the magistrate found the accused guilty and sentenced him to seven years in jail and a fine of Rs 10 lakh, of which Rs 5 lakh would be given to Adeeb,” Yadav added.
The court mentioned that with the rise of newly developed technologies, cybercrime has increased and become a menace to humankind. Protection against cybercrime is a vital part of social, cultural, and security aspects of the nation.
