AGRA: Aligarh Nagar Nigam (ANN) mayor Prashant Singhal has announced that a resolution proposing the renaming of Aligarh to Harigarh had been passed during a meeting of the civic body. The resolution is now set to be forwarded to the government for consideration.
Singhal said on Tuesday: “During a meeting on Sunday, our councilor Sanjay Pandit proposed the name change from Aligarh to Harigarh. The proposal garnered unanimous support from all councilors, and it will now be submitted to the government for their consideration. We are hopeful that the government will respond positively to our request. The renaming of Aligarh to Harigarh has been a longstanding demand.”
A similar resolution was passed by the Aligarh district council months before the August 2022 assembly elections. However, as the district council lacked the authority to change the name of the district, the request was subsequently submitted to the government. Now, the BJP-led Aligarh civic body has revisited the issue.
Last year, the BJP-led district councils of Aligarh and Mainpuri had both passed proposals to rename their respective districts. The Mainpuri district council sought to rename Mainpuri to Mayan Nagar. The Aligarh district council president said Harigarh was Aligarh’s “ancient name”. The president of the Mainpuri district council also justified the move, stating that the district was originally founded by the sage Mayan, making it appropriate to rename Mainpuri as Mayan Nagar.
The proposed renaming of Aligarh and Mainpuri districts comes in the wake of the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to rename districts such as Allahabad and Faizabad. This has subsequently led to a surge in demand for the renaming of various cities. In Agra, a lawmaker has proposed changing the city’s name to Agravan or Agarwal, while another has suggested renaming Muzaffarnagar to Laxmi Nagar.
