NEW DELHI: India’s youngest airline, Akasa, which started flying in August 2022, will start international flights from next month. The low-cost, which has secured bilateral agreements for Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar, will have a four-times-a-week flight between Mumbai and Doha from March 28, 2024. Since the bilateral agreements for Dubai are fully used, Akasa does not have the clearance to fly there as of now.
“Akasa Air becomes the first Indian airline to fly overseas in a record period of 19 months since its inception,” the airline said. Akasa is the first airline to fly overseas under the government’s relaxed 0/20 rule – which mandates an Indian carrier must have a fleet of at least 20 planes – to do so. The earlier rule was 5/20, which mandated an airline must have operated for at least five years – in addition to the unchanged fleet requirement of 20.
Akasa founder & CEO Vinay Dube said, “We are delighted to announce our international operations with the launch of our first destination – Doha, to our growing network. The introduction of four flights a week, connecting directly with Mumbai, will cater to a diverse set of travelers from the two countries, facilitating tourism, commerce, and strengthening bilateral ties.”
