NEW DELHI: The breakway NCP faction led by Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar and senior leader Praful Patel on Monday appointed Sunil Tatkare as the state party chief while “sacking” the current president Jayant Patil.
Ajit Pawar, who had pulled a coup in the party on Sunday, clarified that Sharad Pawar remains the national party president.
Speaking to reporters, the Ajit Pawar faction of NCP said that the decision to join the Maharashtra government was for the “betterment of the state”.
Praful Patel announced that Ajit Pawar has been unanimously elected as the leader of the legislature party and the Maharashtra assembly speaker has been informed about the decision.
The senior party leader added that Anil Bhaidas Patil has been appointed as the chief whip of NCP in the assembly.
NCP MP Tatkare said that he has taken over the responsibility of Maharashtra NCP chief and vowed to strengthen the party in the state, just hours after Sharad Pawar made a similar statement.
“I have taken into confidence all leaders of the party. I have also called a meeting of all the legislators and zila parishad leaders,” Tatkare said.
Interestingly, when quizzed about who will be the national NCP chief, Ajit Pawar remarked: “Have you forgotten that Sharad Pawar is the party’s national president?”
Earlier today, NCP chief Sharad Pawar sacked party’s working president Praful Patel and Lok Sabha MP Sunil Tatkare, who have sided with Ajit Pawar in his rebellion, for engaging in “anti-party” activities.
However, Sharad Pawar is yet to take any action against his nephew Ajit Pawar.
In a surprise yet expected rebellion, Ajit Pawar on Sunday joined the Eknath Shinde-BJP government as deputy chief minister along with eight other NCP MLAs who were inducted as ministers.
Tatkare’s daughter Aditi was among the ministers who took oath on Sunday.
Ajit Pawar has claimed the support of a majority of NCP MLAs and declared that the party is backing the Maharashtra government. Sharad Pawar played down his nephew’s rebellion and has vowed to strengthen the NCP unit in Maharashtra.
