MUMBAI: After being in a higher moderate category for the last few days, Mumbai’s air quality index (AQI) rose to almost near a poor mark (196) of 200 on Thursday thus further deteriorating the air quality Mumbaikars breathed. AQI is nothing but the concentration of carcinogenic PM2.5 in air.
As against 8 suburbs previously, nearly 13 suburbs were in poor category of AQI on Thursday which included Kandivali west,Sewri, Shivaji Nagar Govandi, Byculla, Mindspace Malad west, Kherwadi bandra east, Chembur, BKC MPCB, Chakala Andheri east, Navy Nagar Colaba, Malad West, Borivali East, and BKC IITM.
On Wednesday, Mumbai’s average air quality index (AQI) was 174 with seven suburbs, comprising mostly along the eastern coast of Mumbai, such as Sewri, Govandi, Kherwadi Bandra East, BKC, Chembur, Navy Nagar in Colaba and Malad West had shown AQI in poor category.
According to experts, due to the sudden decline in wind speed and rise in moist air from across the shores, the city was seen layered with a thick smog. Out of 26 suburban air monitoring stations in Mumbai region, 13 were in poor category while rest all, except one, showed moderate air quality.
Experts said the low wind speed and moisture in coastal air lead to smoke and dust from vehicles, industries and construction sites remaining suspended in air over the city for a longer time instead of getting blown away leading to higher levels of pollution. Poor air triggered irritation among Mumbaikars, especially those who indulged in heavy exertions and have respiratory health issues, complained citizens from Chembur, Colaba, Andheri and a few other central and eastern suburbs.
