MUMBAI: An Air India flight from Mumbai to New York had an air turn back on Tuesday after the Boeing 777 aircraft developed a technical problem over two hours into the flight.
An air turnback involves an unplanned return to the airport the flight departed from. It is a reportable incident.
Flight AI-1119 departed Mumbai around 2.20 am and about two and a half hours later was over the Iran airspace when the pilots of the 14-year old Boeing777 aircraft (VT-AEI) decided to divert to Mumbai.”The aircraft, fuelled for the 16 hour flight to New York would have performed an over weight landing at Mumbai,” said a senior pilot.
An Air India official said that the flight air-returned due to a minor technical issue. “It landed safely back at Mumbai for precautionary checks in the interest of the safety of passengers and crew,” the official said adding that hat passengers were offered hotel accommodation, alternate flight options and looked after. “Efforts are on to find an alternate aircraft to operate this flight expeditiously,” the official said.
Air India did not issue a statement.
On June 06, Air India flight from Delhi to San Francisco was diverted to Magadan, a port town in Siberia following a technical problem with the 13-year old Boeing 777 (VT-ALH) aircraft. The passengers were stranded in Magadan for two days and flew out to San Francisco on June 08 after the airline sent another aircraft.
On May 30, a technical glitch forced pilots of the Boeing 777 (VT-ALM) aircraft operating Air India Delhi-Vancouver flight to do an air turnback about two hours after take-off.
On August 04, the airline had an air turn back involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating a flight from Mumbai to London. The aircraft returned to Mumbai due to a suspected technical glitch in the port-side engine. The aircraft, operating flight AI-131, landed an hour after take-off. On the same day, an IndiGo A320neo operating a flight from Patna to Delhi had an air turnback after one of its two engines reportedly shut down mid-flight.
Last year, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation had investigated two incidents involving Air India A320 air turn back. On May 17, Air India flight AI-675 from Mumbai to Kolkata returned minutes after takeoff following a “cargo door warning’’. In an earlier incident an Air India flight from Bengaluru to Delhi returned to the departure airport following a warning on the Airbus aircraft’s `Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitor’ system, which monitors and displays engine and aircraft system information to the pilots.
