JAMMU: A high alert has been sounded in Jammu division following inputs about a possible terror attack in the region. All Army installations, especially, and even Army schools along the Jammu-Pathankot national highway, are on alert.
Three Kashmir-based people, meanwhile, have been arrested in Kathua as their movements were considered suspicious.
“Terrorists are planning a Poonch-type terror attack to make their presence felt and disrupt the G20 meeting,” officials said on condition of anonymity, adding that the alert was sounded to thwart any plot by Pakistan-based terrorists as intelligence inputs hinted at attacks on Army bases and Army schools.
Students’ parents received text messages regarding the high alert. One such text message said: “As per instructions received from Nominee Chairman, Vidyalaya Management Committee (VMC), students residing outside Sunjuwan Campus will not report to school tomorrow due to security reasons.”
“In view of the threats, the Army schools along the national highway remained closed on Wednesday,” officials said, adding, “All schools present inside Army Installations have also been closed given the security measures.”
The Jammu and Kashmir police said the three people detained by the NIA in Kathua for questioning were “Mohammed Asif, Masarat Ahmed and Basarat Bashir, all are resistant of Pulwama”. The men were detained at “NHW Hatli Morh” while travelling in a truck going from Jammu to Lakhanpur and “have been kept at P/P Hatli”.
“Security forces remain vigilant and continue to monitor the situation closely along the Jammu-Pathankot national highway,” officials said.
In view of the ambush of a single vehicle in Poonch on April 20, an advisory has been issued that says “no single vehicle be moved and shall be parked in civilian areas (sic)”. Five Army jawans were killed in the April 20 ambush.
