6 judges to retire soon, SC collegium to see new faces | India News

NEW DELHI: A day before his retirement, Justice K M Joseph of the Supreme Court delivered two judgments even as the court would have two more vacancies by the end of this month with Justices A R Rastogi and V Ramasubramanian set to retire on June 17 and June 29, respectively.
With three of the members of CJI D Y Chandrachudled collegium retiring, its composition would undergo a major change as new members in Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai and Surya Kant would join the CJI and Justice Sanjay K Kaul from June 30 to select persons for filling up of the vacancies caused by the retirements during summer vacation.
With six Supreme Court judges retiring by year-end, the SC collegium would undergo major change in its composition. Since assuming the office of CJI on November 11, Justice Chandrachud-led collegium has so far selected 10 persons for appointment as judges of the highest court — Justices Dipankar Datta, Pankaj Mithal, Sanjay Karol, Sanjay Kumar, Ahsanuddin Amanullah, Manoj Misra, Rajesh Bindal, Arvind Kumar, Prashant K Mishra and K V Viswanathan.
Unfortunately, not one of the 10 appointments, made in seven months since he became the CJI, was a woman judge. At present there are three women judges in SC — Justices Hima Kohli, B V Nagarathna and Bela M Trivedi. Justice Nagarathna is scheduled to become CJI, the first woman to head the judiciary, on September 24, 2027 and would retire on October 29, 2027, after a tenure of 36 days.
Ten days after the last of three vacancies caused in the Supreme Court during the summer vacation, Justice Krishna Murari would retire on July 8.
Justice S R Bhat would be the next to retire on October 20, followed by Justice Kaul on December 25 this year, allowing the CJI-led collegium to recommend to the government names of six new judges for appointment to the Supreme Court.
With very low representation of women among judges of constitutional courts, traditionally a male bastion, being discussed passionately by the CJI himself in different occasions, it would be interesting to watch how many women would the collegium led by him select while filling these six vacancies.
Next year, there will be three more vacancies as Justices Aniruddha Bose, A S Bopanna and Hima Kohli will retire. These three vacancies would also be filled by the collegium headed by CJI Chandrachud, taking the total appointments of SC judges during his tenure as CJI to 19.
