RAIPUR: Five labourers, including a father and son, who slept in a brick kiln died while another was admitted to a Raipur hospital in critical condition on Wednesday morning. Asphyxiation appeared to be the cause of the deaths.
Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel expressed grief over the deaths and announced ex gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of each of the deceased.
The incident took place in Gadhphuljhar village, in Basna region. The workers had slept on Tuesday night on a pile of dried bricks and were found dead in the morning. The Mahasamund district collector has ordered a magisterial inquiry. Sources said the brick kiln owner was operating the kiln illegally in the village. Police are yet to act against him.
Last month, too, three people had died in a similar incident at a brick kiln in Balrampur district.
